How Sand Filters Work

A sand filter begins with pressurized water which is passed through a filtering medium. Sand filters use as a filtering medium a special size of sand.

Pressurized water enters the top of the filter tank through a diffuser. A diffuser simply diffuses the water, much like your shower at home. As the water passes downward, by the force of gravity and pressure, particulates are trapped in the sand. When the water passes to the bottom of the filter, it is returned to the pool.

Sand filters filter out debris down to about 40 microns in size-this is actually quite large in the world of particulate matter. DE filters trap much smaller sizes.

So why would someone want a sand filter over a DE filter? It’s simple: sand filters cost less to operate because the sand only needs to be replaced every few years. DE filters must be fairly regularly emptied and refilled with fresh DE.
