How It Works: Pool Pumps
The heart of the pool system is the water pump. No pump, no circulation. No circulation, no filtering. Result? Filthy pond water. In a typical system, an electric motor spins an impeller/propeller inside a closed pump housing.
The pump sucks water from the drain (at the bottom of the pool) and from the skimmer (at the waterline of the pool) and forces the water through the filter (all pools) and the heater (most pools) and back into the pool.
Of course, there are a few more components, such as a fine-mesh strainer basket just before the pool pump, and some valves to regulate the flow of water (i.e., more skimmer flow, or more drain flow).
